Remy Cointreau buys American Westland Distillery

The owner of Bruichladdich expands

The whisky distillery Westland in Seattle/Washington is to be overtaken by the French group Remy Cointreau as the company announced. The closure of the transaction is expected for the end of this month. With this acquisition the spirit company enlarges its portfolio of premium single malt whisky. Westland produces single malt whiskey that was matured in American Oak as well as a Sherry cask matured one. And they also bottle a peated single malt whiskey.

Remy Cointreau is already owner of Bruichladdich

Four years ago Remy Cointreau had created much of attention buy the takeover of the Bruichladdich distillery for a price of 58 mio pounds. Due to this acquisition Remy also owns the labels Port Charlotte and Octomore. Only some days ago the 2nd edition of 10 year old bottsingle malts of these labels has been released called The Three Tens as we reported here.

Westland Distillery produces American Single Malt Whiskey

The Westland Distillery has been opened in 2001 and wants to make the American single malt whiskey internationally popular. It is a member of a group of distilleries that are working for the official installation of the category American Single Malt Whiskey.

Westland produces single malt whiskey that was matured in American oak as well as Sherry cask matured whiskey. There also is a peated Westland Single Malt Whiskey available. The distillery uses local barley and peat from a bog in Sheldon/Washington. The Westland Distillery was awarded “Word Craft producer of the year” this year by the famous Whisky Magazine, The Westland whisky has already got several international prices and awards.
