Benromach celebrates its 20th anniversary with exclusive whisky

Twenty years after the reopening of family owned Benromach distillery by His Royal Highness The Duke of Rothesay, Prince Charles, a rare single malt whisky was presented on this occasion. This is the bottling of a first fill sherry butt with the number 1, which was personally signed by the Prince during the official reopening of the distillery on 15 October 1998.

Cask strength and aromatic

Benromach Cask No. 1 is an extremely rare and limited whisky from the first cask, which was filled after many years of closure when the distillery was reopened and allowed to mature in the warehouse. Exactly 20 years after filling – on 21 August 2018 – a total of 575 bottles were filled at cask strength of 60.1% abv. The two decades of ageing in the sherry cask offer lush aromas of succulent blackberries and stewed damson plums, smooth chocolate and warm spices, with a hint of citrus fruits, coffee beans, roasted hazelnut and charred oak.

Exclusive decanter

The 20 year old single malt single cask whisky is filled in 575 elaborately designed, individually numbered decanters with a certificate of authenticity, which displays the distillation and bottling date, as well as the date the distillery was first established. Each decanter is closed with a copper stopper, reminiscent of Benromach's gleaming pot stills, and packed in a striking wooden presentation box with double doors. These rare bottles will be sold exclusively through the Benromach distillery visitor centre with a RRP of £1,000 from 15th October 2018. Pre-orders can be placed from September 3rd.

Charitable contribution

Ewen Mackintosh, Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owner of Benromach Distillery, said: "The Urquhart family has decided to donate all profits from the sale of this product to charitable causes. This incredibly rare and unique single cask whisky marks a significant moment in Benromach's history and we look forward to the next 20 years." Benromach Distillery

Originally built in 1898, the distillery was mothballed several times, most recently in 1983. 10 years later, Gordon & MacPhail revived Benromach and completely refurbished the distillery for five years before it was officially reopened by Prince Charles in October 1998. A year later, a visitor centre was added. Benromach is now one of the few distilleries in Scotland to use traditional methods, without any automated machinery.
