50 yo Yamazaki auctioned for more than $343.000
New record price for Japanese whisky
At an auction of Bonhams in Hong Kong on 17 August a bottle of Yamazaki 50 yo was sold. With $343,318 (£269,522) the lucky bidder set a new word record: In January another Yamazaki 50 had been auctioned for “only” $312,105.
The increase in value of old and rare bottlings is unbroken and seems to continue faster and faster: another news that was spread on 17 August reported about the auction of a 70 yo Glenlivet of Gordon & MacPhail in Glasgow. The gavel came down at $85,500 (£67,122) – the supposed price had been somewhere between $38.200 and $51,000. When we reported here about these rare Glenlivet bottling it was said to have a value of $38,290 (£30,000)
So whisky investment can of course be profitable – if you manage everything right and if you got the wherewithal to participate. All those you can’t and don’t have should probably take the chance and buy a Glenlivet 21 or a Glenlivet 40 Years of Duncan Taylor. Open it, sit down and enjoy it – invest in your pleasure.
