The Whisky
The Braeval distillery doesn't have any distillery bottling. However you can get a lot of the Scotch from the independent bottlers. The distillery character is light and partly sweet. The most common notes are floral and vanilla.
The major part of the Scotch goes into the Blended Whisky industry. The Chivas Regal is made from a lot of Braeval's spirit.
The Production
The distillery produces about 4 million litres of pure alcohol per year. The vast majority of this huge production output land in the Blend of the owner Chivas Brothers Ltd.
The Pot Stills
The Braeval distillery has six pot stills two big wash stills with 22,000 litres volume and four 'small' spirit stills with 10,000 liters volume. The wash stills are very pear-shaped with a rising lyne arm. The spirit stills are rather tall and have a reflux bowl above the intermediate piece - a good combination to produce a lot of spirit without the sharp tones.
The Malting
The stainless steel mashtun with the copper lidThe distillery is still very young and has never had their own malting floors. The purchase their malt from the big malters and always buy unpeated malt.
Braeval already uses a modern stainless steel mash tun.
The Warehouse
They are all bricked buildings and rather tall for warehouses. Some of the casks still have the old name written on the lids.
History
The distillery was founded in 1973 by the Chivas Brothers Ltd. Shortly after the opening another two stills were bought. In 1978 the last still was installed, the number of still is now totalling six. In 2001 Chivas Brothers was bought by Pernod Ricard. They then decided to close the distillery in 2002. Fortunately the distillery reopened in 2008 and resumed production.
The Visitor Centre
The distillery is an industrial site and doesn't have a visitor centre.
