In 1830, the distillery was founded by George Donald near the town of Annan. In 1883, Annandale passed to John Gardner, who sold it to Johnnie Walker after ten years. However, the latter shut it down in 1924 and sold the site to a Robinson family who farmed there. In 2007, the buildings were purchased by David Thomson and Teresa Church, and work began in 2011 to reopen them. On November 15, 2014, the first cask after the reopening was bottled.
The distillery was visited by Alfred Barnard in the mid-1880s, preserving a detailed account of the distillery at that time. The distillery's annual output at that time was said to be 28,000 gallons (equivalent to about 130,000 liters using today's conversion value of about 4.54 liters per gallon).
