Tomintoul 16 Years
At the first glance the 16-year-old Tomintoul is quite similar to the 10-year-old- However, it contains more sherry cask whiskies, wich make it rounder and sweeter. Together with the longer maturation this results in a very good single malt.

What happens when a 'blend filler' distillery starts to bottle Single Malts? Right, they get a problem with the caliber of their casks (mainly refill ex-bourbon). Luckily, Tomintoul 16 is more sherry-influenced than its 10-year-old brother. On the nose, you get dark fruits with hints of walnuts and marzipan, heather honey and very distant peatiness. The taste is light and sweet with grainy citrus, cornflakes and some crisp oak. Vanilla, spices and mild tannins accompany the modest finish. An easy sipper that appears younger than the age statement suggests.

Nosing:
Light and fruity, pear predominantly. Red apples. Background oak aroma is almost nutty.
Taste:
Sweet arrival, fruitiness and citrus fruit. Vanilla custard. There's a slight graininess which I usually associate with younger whiskies.
Finish:
Medium length. Oaky with mild spiciness, residual fruit. Relatively non descript, surprisingly dry for a relatively sweet whisky.
Comment:
An interesting one this, very fruit led throughout. Reminds me a lot of younger Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie, but with more wood involvement. Its definitely easy drinking stuff, but lacks the intensity of flavour that I look for personally, also the finish is a little one dimensional. Got to say that for a 16 year old the price is very reasonable though, and I'd take it over the aforementioned standard releases any day. Probably not one I'll come back to, but pretty good.
