Although Hakushu 12 does not have the caliber of a Yamazaki, it is certainly a characterful and distinctly different Japanese Single Malt. Featuring floral and grassy notes, the aroma is quite complex with fresh herbs, heather honey and citrus fruits. A thin layer of delicate and dry peat smoke is well-integrated. On the palate, a fruity sweet arrival turns into aromatic, zesty but rather mild peatiness, dominated by herbal freshness. The moderate finish is peppery, slightly dry and leaves with a hint of oak bitterness. Overall, a harmonic and well-composed malt with character.

An enticing nose with floral cereal notes and pronounced grassy aromas. Banana leaf, vanilla bean and cappuccino notes remind of young Cuban Cohiba cigar flavours. The peat is rather restrained with mineral and slightly medicinal notes.
The palate is lean and austere with Suntory's signature mid-palate alcohol heat structuring the event. Grainy and earthy tannins elicit the presence of peat before it is noticed in the aftertaste, which again shows herbal, grassy and mineral notes.
An exceptional, yet young and "fresh" spirit, meticulously crafted for its style, with lots of potential for future bottlings. Unfortunately, export markets seem to be lucky to receive any Hakushu at all, making this a rare and pricey find.
