Nosing: Peat and smoke, but with a cloyingly sweet undertone.... I love Balvenie, and I love Islay, this smells exactly like I imagined it would. The peat is intense, but not maritime like laphroaig, more rounded and "friendly", but still smokey. Vanilla, dark cherry, and pomegranate buried deeply under the smoke.
Taste: Spicy, aggressive, but in a good way. This is the "freshest" plated dram I have ever experienced..... crisp, clean smoke, chili peppers, cooling into vanilla, honey sweetness and grapefruit later. This is an amazing dram.
Finish: Long finish, and very pleasant. The initial punch mellows into pleasant smoke lingering lightly, and the sweet/citrus notes tend to become more pronounced.
Comment: Dear David Stewart, why don't you try a "peat month"? This takes one of my favorite highland drams, and kicks it up to a point beyond belief. Balvenie with huevos. Fantastic dram, and a true gem of a scotch. With my affinity for peat, this is an easy 5 for me.
